My Journey Through Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka felt like stepping into a world of colour, nature, and constant movement. In just one trip, I experienced chaotic markets, peaceful temples, jungle hikes, endless tea plantations, and laid-back beach towns.

From city streets to coastal sunsets, here’s how my journey unfolded.

My Sri Lanka Travel Route

Colombo – Chaos, Culture & Coastline

I began in Colombo, and one of the best decisions I made was hiring a tuk-tuk driver for a city tour (costing $3). It was fast-paced, loud, and unforgettable.

We visited:

  • Independence Memorial Hall
  • Gangaramaya Temple
  • Seema Malaka
  • Viharamahadevi Park
  • Lotus Tower
  • Sri Bala Selva Vinayagar Temple
  • The striking Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque)

We stopped at a gemstone shop and tea shop — classic Sri Lanka experiences — before driving through the old colonial district with its faded grandeur.

Later, I explored Pettah Market, a maze of narrow streets bursting with vendors, spices, fabrics, and noise.

One of the most surreal moments was walking along the beachfront train tracks, stepping aside as trains thundered past — such a raw and uniquely Sri Lankan experience.

Sigiriya – Lakes & Lion Rock Views

From Colombo, I took the bus to Sigiriya.

Life slowed down here. I walked around the peaceful Kayanwala Lake, watching fishermen and birds glide across the water at sunset.

The highlight was hiking Pidurangala Rock. The climb was rocky and challenging, but the reward at the top was breathtaking — panoramic views across jungle plains and directly over to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Lion Rock).

After the hike, local curries tasted even better.

Kandy – Temples and Tradition

Next, I caught the bus to Kandy.

I walked up to the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, where a giant white Buddha overlooks the city.

In the evening, I watched a traditional Kandyan cultural dance show — vibrant costumes, drumming, and fire performances that celebrated Sri Lanka’s heritage. Afterwards, I wandered through the night food market, sampling local snacks.

Nuwara Eliya – Tea Country & Waterfalls

The scenic train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya was unforgettable. Rolling green hills, misty mountains, and endless tea plantations passed by the open train door.

In Nuwara Eliya, I explored the local village and ate in small family-run restaurants.

I hiked through tea plantations to reach Lover’s Leap Waterfall. Walking between the bright green tea bushes felt peaceful and almost dreamlike.

Ella – Iconic Views & Easy Hikes

Another scenic train journey brought me to Ella.

Ella felt relaxed and traveller-friendly.

I visited:

  • Nine Arch Bridge
  • Little Adam’s Peak
  • Ravana Falls

Watching the train pass over Nine Arch Bridge was a bucket-list moment. The hike up Little Adam’s Peak was gentle but rewarding, with wide views across the hills.

Arugum Bay – Surf and Slow Living

From Ella, I shared a taxi with friends to Arugam Bay.

Life here revolved around the ocean.

I took surfing lessons at Arugam Bay Beach, wiped out many times, and laughed even more. When not surfing, I relaxed on the sand watching others ride the waves.

Evenings were spent in beachside cafés and local restaurants, listening to live music and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.

The Journey Back to Colombo

Eventually, I took the night bus back to Colombo Airport — tired but completely fulfilled.

Sri Lanka gave me:

  • Bustling city life
  • Ancient rock fortresses
  • Lush tea plantations
  • Scenic train journeys
  • Jungle hikes
  • Surfing beaches

All within one compact and beautifully diverse country.

Final Thoughts

Sri Lanka isn’t just a destination — it’s a journey of contrasts.

From the energy of Colombo to the serenity of Sigiriya, from misty mountain railways to warm ocean sunsets, every stop felt different.

It’s affordable, adventurous, welcoming, and filled with raw natural beauty.

And I already know — I’ll be back.
