My Journey Through Zimbabwe!

Zimbabwe had been on my travel wish list for years, and finally crossing into the country felt surreal. This journey began at a land border crossing from Botswana into Zimbabwe and ended in one of Africa’s most iconic destinations—Victoria Falls. What followed was an unforgettable mix of natural wonders, wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, and meaningful travel moments.

I experienced Zimbabwe as part of an organised group tour with G Adventures, which started in Namibia and finished in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Travelling this way made crossing borders, planning activities, and navigating logistics effortless—allowing me to focus fully on the experience.

Crossing the Botswana–Zimbabwe Land Border

Entering Zimbabwe by land was an experience in itself. The border crossing from Botswana was straightforward and well-organized, especially as part of a guided tour. Border officials were professional, and the process moved smoothly, making it an easy introduction to the country.

Crossing by land also gave me a real sense of transition between countries, cultures, and landscapes—something you miss when flying.

First Impressions of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Arriving in Victoria Falls, the energy of the town was immediately welcoming. This small but lively town is built around one of the world’s most powerful natural wonders and serves as the adventure capital of Zimbabwe.

The town is compact, easy to navigate, and filled with travelers from all over the world—yet it still feels deeply connected to local life.

Visiting Victoria Falls: One of the Seven Natural Wonders

Seeing Victoria Falls in person was absolutely breathtaking. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke That Thunders”), the sheer power and scale of the falls are impossible to capture in photos.

Highlights of the Victoria Falls visit included:

  • Walking along the rainforest trail
  • Feeling the mist rise from the gorge
  • Viewing the falls from multiple viewpoints
  • Hearing the thunder of water long before seeing it

It’s one of those places that truly lives up to the hype.

Supporting Women Empowerment Through Local Food

One of the most meaningful experiences of my trip was sharing a meal prepared by a women’s empowerment organisation in Victoria Falls. The food was locally sourced, home-cooked, and full of flavour—offering a true taste of Zimbabwean cuisine.

This experience wasn’t just about food; it was about:

  • Supporting local women-led initiatives
  • Learning about daily life in the community
  • Connecting with culture through shared meals

It added depth and purpose to the journey beyond sightseeing.

Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi River

The sunset cruise along the Zambezi River was one of the most peaceful moments of the trip. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the river came alive with wildlife and golden reflections.

During the cruise, we saw:

  • Hippos surfacing near the boat
  • Crocodiles resting along the banks
  • Buffalos gathering near the water
  • Stunning African sunsets

It was calm, scenic, and unforgettable—one of the best ways to experience the Zambezi.

Safari in Zambezi National Park

Just minutes from Victoria Falls lies Zambezi National Park, where I experienced a safari unlike any other. The park’s proximity to the river makes wildlife sightings especially rewarding.

During the safari, we spotted:

  • Zebras roaming freely
  • Buffalo and antelope species
  • Incredible birdlife
  • Vast, untouched landscapes

It felt wild, uncrowded, and authentic—a reminder of how rich Zimbabwe’s wildlife truly is.

Dinner at Victoria Falls Lodge: Wildlife at the Watering Hole

Dinner at Victoria Falls Lodge was easily one of the most magical evenings of the trip. The lodge overlooks a watering hole, where dozens—sometimes hundreds—of elephants gathered to drink as the sun set.

Our Accomodation Surrouded by Nature

You didn’t need to leave the hotel to witness Zimbabwes nature, wildlife freely roamed the lodge grounds, including:

  • Hippos
  • Elephants
  • Monkeys
  • Warthogs
  • Crocodiles

Watching animals move naturally through the lodge area was surreal and made the experience feel truly special.

Traveling with G Adventures: Namibia to Zimbabwe

This trip was part of a G Adventures overland tour that started in Namibia and ended in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Travelling with G Adventures meant:

  • Seamless border crossings
  • Knowledgeable local guides
  • Well-planned activities
  • Responsible and sustainable travel practices

It was the perfect way to experience multiple countries while still having meaningful cultural interactions.

Why Zimbabwe Left a Lasting Impression

Zimbabwe surprised me in the best way possible. From the power of Victoria Falls to intimate wildlife encounters and community-based experiences, the country offered depth, beauty, and warmth at every turn.

It’s a destination that deserves more attention and one I would return to in a heartbeat.

Final Thoughts: My Zimbabwe Travel Experience

Traveling through Zimbabwe—especially entering by land from Botswana and ending at Victoria Falls—was an unforgettable chapter of my journey through southern Africa. The mix of adventure, wildlife, culture, and responsible tourism made this experience both exciting and deeply meaningful.

If you’re considering Zimbabwe, don’t hesitate. It’s powerful, welcoming, and unforgettable.
