Travelling through East Africa was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life, and my journey through Uganda holds a very special place in my heart. From crossing the border by bus from Kenya to volunteering in Jinja and exploring the vibrant streets of Kampala, Uganda, welcomed with warmth, culture, and unforgettable moments.

Travelling from Kenya to Uganda by Bus
My journey began with an overland bus trip from Kenya to Uganda, crossing at the Busia border crossing, an adventure in itself. Crossing the border by bus gave me a real sense of East African travel—slow, scenic, and full of small interactions that make the journey memorable. Watching the landscapes change as we entered Uganda was exciting and set the tone for what was to come.
Volunteering in Jinja with IGULU Foundation
I spent two weeks in Jinja, a beautiful town located near the source of the River Nile. During this time, I volunteered with an orphan-focused organisation called IGULU Foundation. The experience was deeply meaningful and gave me insight into local community life while allowing me to contribute in a small but important way. Spending time with the kids in their care, helping them with their school work, playing, laughing with them, and helping cook food – a very rewarding experience.
Volunteering in Uganda was not only rewarding but also grounding. It reminded me how powerful human connection can be, even when language and culture differ.
Experiencing Life in Jinja, Uganda
Jinja is known as Uganda’s adventure capital, and it definitely lived up to that reputation. During my stay, I filled my days with both peaceful and exciting activities.
Horse Riding Along the River Nile
One of the highlights of my time in Jinja was horse riding along the River Nile. Riding beside one of the world’s most famous rivers was surreal and calming, surrounded by nature and fresh air.
Swimming in the River Nile & Sunset Views
I also went swimming in the River Nile, which was refreshing and unforgettable. In the evenings, I loved sitting by the river and watching the sunset, as the sky changed colours and the day slowly came to an end.
Shopping in Juja & Local Town Walks
I spent time shopping at Juja Market, exploring the town, and walking through Juja. These walks gave me a chance to observe daily life, interact with locals, and experience Uganda beyond tourist attractions. The markets were lively, colourful, and full of character.
Travelling by Public Taxi to Kampala
After my time in Jinja, I took a public taxi to Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. The journey itself was an experience—busy, energetic, and very local. Using public transport helped me feel more connected to everyday Ugandan life.
Exploring Kampala: Culture, History, and City Life
Kampala is a city full of contrasts—modern shops, historic landmarks, religious sites, and bustling markets all exist side by side.
Walking Through Kampala City
I explored much of Kampala on foot, walking through different neighborhoods and observing the rhythm of the city. The streets were full of energy, with vendors, music, traffic, and people everywhere.
Visiting Markets and Shops
The markets in Kampala were intense in the best way—crowded, vibrant, and full of local goods. I also visited various shops throughout the city, getting a feel for both modern and traditional commerce.
Religious & Historical Landmarks
I visited Uganda National Mosque (formerly known as Gaddafi National Mosque), which offered both a peaceful atmosphere and incredible views of the city. I also explored the Kabaka’s Palace, where I learned about Uganda’s history and saw the dungeon that once held prisoners—a powerful and emotional experience.
Independence Monument
Another important stop was the Independence Monument, a symbol of Uganda’s freedom and resilience. Visiting it helped me better understand the country’s past and national pride.
Final Thoughts on My Uganda Travel Experience
My journey through Uganda was filled with learning, adventure, and connection. From volunteering in Jinja to exploring Kampala’s history and markets, every part of the trip showed me a different side of the country.
Uganda is more than just a destination—it’s a feeling. The people, the culture, the landscapes, and the everyday moments all left a lasting impression on me. If you’re considering travelling through East Africa, I can confidently say that Uganda is worth experiencing.
